Dae Lantz Jr., a longtime Tehachapi schoolteacher who was well known as a kind and gentle man, left us last week at the grand old age of 94. Dae and his wife, Jean, were among the earliest residents of Cameron Canyon, and they moved out there to a cattle ranch in 1949 before there was electricity, phone service, or even a fully paved road.

After being raised mostly in Burbank and attending USC, Dae moved to Nebraska to care for his grandmother. An uncle who lived in Tulsa told Dae about a teaching job there, so he applied for the position and was hired. It was in Tulsa that Jean was working as a telephone operator, and one of her co-workers knew Dae and suggested that he meet Jean, describing her like this: "She's short and she doesn't smoke." Not much of a description, but that was enough to make Dae want to learn more, and when he found out how cute and lively she was, he made her his wife.

In 2003, Dae-su is suddenly released after being sedated and hypnotized. Dae-su wakes up and, after testing his fighting skills on a group of thugs, a mysterious beggar gives him money and a cell phone. Dae-su enters a sushi restaurant where he meets Mi-do, a young chef. He receives a taunting phone call from his captor, collapses, and is taken in by Mi-do. Dae-su attempts to leave Mi-do's apartment, but Mi-do, now interested in Dae-su, stops him. They reconcile and begin to form a bond. After he recovers, Dae-su attempts to find his daughter, but gives up on trying to contact her after learning she was adopted after his kidnapping. Now focused on identifying his captors, Dae-su locates the Chinese restaurant that made his prison food and finds the prison by following a deliveryman.
On the October 29 broadcast of tvN's 'Wise Mountain Village Life' starring the lead cast members of 'Hospital Playlist', actor Jung Kyung Ho answered a phone call from his girlfriend of 8-years, Girls' Generation's Sooyoung.
On this day, Jung Kyung Ho and Kim Dae Myung feasted on some fried chicken they brought from the town for dinner. While eating on a small deck in front of the house, the two actors saw the sun setting, and pulled out their phones to snap a picture. Seeing the sunset, Jung Kyung Ho casually said, "Wow, Choi Sooyoung would love this so much."
Then as soon as he mentioned Sooyoung's name, he got a phone call from Sooyoung! Jung Kyung Ho remarked. "She's a ghost. She's calling me right now." While Kim Dae Myung reacted in shock, going, "What?", Jung Kyung Ho answered the call sweetly, referring to Sooyoung as "Jagiya". He then explained to Sooyoung what happened, before turning the call to a video chat.
I am a longtime owner who exchanges a week or two every year to visit new resorts. I also just learned that RCI, the biggest exchange company, bought a competitor named DAE. Will this kind of change expand or reduce my exchange options?
First, some background. The entire timeshare industry has undergone many changes since the mortgage and stock-market meltdown of 2008. Many of the major developers slowed or stopped new construction as money got tight. Others switched business models, opting for "asset light" operations where, instead of building new timeshares, they gobbled up existing timeshares, in good locations, to expand their inventory. All of the major hotel companies, meanwhile, spun off their timeshare divisions to become stand-alone companies, with Wyndham being the latest. Hilton's timeshare unit launched itself as a new public company earlier this year.
RCI, the world's largest timeshare exchange company (followed closely by Interval International), is owned by the Wyndham chain. Despite having 4,300 resorts already in its arsenal of exchange inventory and 3.8 million subscribers, RCI announced in October that it had purchased DAE, which has a large foothold in Australia and the Asia-Pacific resort market along with 80,000 members.
DAE is celebrating its 20th anniversary and, despite having a much lower marketing profile in the US, is the largest privately held exchange company. Worldwide, it is the third largest exchange company. Like RCI, DAE offers programs for owners of weeks and points.
Executives at both companies said it is way too early to evaluate how the acquisition will play out (or impact timeshare exchangers). Corporate marriages such as this typically take months to shake out as the acquiring company integrates the acquired into its network. For the time being, both companies say DAE will continue to operate under its own brand while, in the big scheme of things, it delivers a large global portfolio of new resorts to RCI's universe.
Fulfillment, in fact, is the biggest problem for all exchange companies --- including the big-brand developer timeshare companies that operate their own internal exchange programs (Disney, Marriott, Vistana, etc.). In decades past, customer had to "deposit and hope" they would get a good exchange. Now all companies, thanks to the Internet, are offering real-time instant bookings for resorts with availability. DAE operators go one step further to avoid the fulfillment bottleneck: if they don't have inventory for a requested exchange, they will get on the phone to find a resort that matches the customer's request. Then they'll call the customer seeking a 24-hour yes or no on accepting the exchange.

During a phone conversation, loud vocal emission from the far-end to the near-end space can disturb nearby people. In this paper, the possibility of actively controlling such unwanted sound emission using a control source placed on the mobile device is investigated. Two different approaches are tested: Global control, minimizing the potential energy measured along a volumetric space surface, and local control, minimizing the squared sound pressure at a discrete point on the phone. From the test results, both approaches can reduce the unwanted sound emission by more than 6 dB in the frequency range up to 2 kHz.
